Fungsi dan Rumus Simple Past Tense

Simple past banyak digunakan dalam percakapan sehari-hari maupun ketika menikmati sebuah novel, cerpen dan cerita dalam bahasa Inggris. 

Secara umum kegunaan dari simple past adalah untuk menceritakan kejadian yang sudah terjadi di masa lampau sebelum sekarang. Dalam kalimat simple past verb yang digunakan adalah kata kerja bentuk kedua. 

Tense past simple ini juga digunakan bersamaan dengan tense yang lain, misalnya saja past progressive dan past perfect. 

Fungsi Simple Past

SIMPLE PAST

Apa fungsi dari simple past? Kapan harus menggunakan simple past? Apa saja kegunaan dari simple past? Semua pertanyaan itu akan terjawab dengan lugas saat ini juga.

1. Simple past digunakan untuk menjelaskan peristiwa yang terjadi di masa lalu, baik dengan menyebutkan adverb of time atau tidak. 

Contoh : 

• I played football yesterday.
• You watched Korean Drama two days ago.
• We visited Jack last week.
• They did the test correctly.
• She kicked the ball.
• He pushed the button.

2. Simple past digunakan dalam narasi atau cerita mengenai suatu kejadian yang sudah terjadi. Terkadang juga simple past dibuat dalam bentuk reported speech.

Contoh : 

Yesterday, I went to the zoo. There I saw many animals. I bought the ticket. It was 4.000 Rupiah. Then I went to a restaurant near the zoo. I ordered fried rice and milkshake. 

3. Simple past juga digunakan untuk menceritakan kebiasaan atau hal yang berulang-ulang terjadi di masa lalu. 

Contoh : 

• When I was young, I always helped my mom in the kitchen.
• When I was a student, I always woke up before six. 

4. Simple past juga digunakan untuk menceritakan sebuah kejadian yang terjadi sebelum atau sesudah kejadian lainnya. Di sini simple past digunakan bersama dengan past perfect atau past continuous. 

Contoh : 

• I was playing cards with Joe when I saw Lina.
• Tony had done the exam before I came back home. 

Rumus Simple Past 

Untuk membuat kalimat dalam simple past sangatlah mudah. Intinya jangan lupa bahwa verb yang digunakan adalah verb bentuk kedua. Jadi memang harus berlatih menghapal perubahan verb tersebut, baik irregular maupun regular verb. 

Affirmative : subject + verb 2 atau subject + was / were + object

Negative : subject + did not + verb 1 atau subject + was/were + not + object

Interrogative : did + s + verb 1 + ? atau was/were + S + O + ?

Verbal Sentences (dengan kata kerja)

• Tony called me.
• Richard made this beautiful statue.
• Bob and Dylan watched the fencing together.

Nominal Sentences (tanpa kata kerja)

1. I was hungry yesterday.
2. She was angry.
3. He was a police officer.
4. They were great.
5. You were my room mate. 
6. We were at the park last weekend.
7. My mom was a football player.
