Memahami Pengertian Noun Clause

Apa itu noun clause? Mungkin masih banyak pembelajar Bahasa Inggris, entah itu pelajar atau bahkan mahasiswa yang masih memiliki pertanyaan tersebut dibenak mereka. Memang bahasa itu unik, karena didalamnya terdapat aturan tertentu yang harus dipelajari, misalnya tentang noun clause.

Jadi noun clause adalah sebuah klausa (clause) yang memiliki fungsi sebagai nomina (kata benda) dalam suatu kalimat. 

Perhatikan contoh dan penjelasan noun clause berikut : 

1. It was true
2. What he said was true

Kalimat pertama menggunakan it sebagai subject / noun. Sedang kalimat kedua, klausa what he said adalah juga subject atau noun.

Lalu bagaimana cara menyusun sebuah noun clause yang benar? Ternyata ada cara dan aturannya. Inilah rumus noun clause : 

whether/if/that/ question word + S + V + …

Bagian awal yakni whether, if, that atau sebuah question word dalam klausa nomina tersebut biasa dinamakan noun clause maker. Hal ini karena bagian itulah yang menjadikan sebuah klausa menjadi noun clause.

2. He know whether he will go.
3. I wonder whether Tom understands the lesson.

1. I'm sure that Gina will call you back later.

1. What you make was really brilliant.
2. I don't know where they go.
3. I don't understand what you want. 

Kata-kata atau bagian kalimat yang digaris-bawahi di atas merupakan noun clause. Perhatikan bahwa pada umumnya whether dan if memiliki fungsi dan makna yang sama, hanya whether akan membuat kalimat menjadi lebih formal. 

Fungsi Noun Clause

Jika melihat dari contoh noun clause di atas, maka mungkin akan terpikir bahwa jenis clouse ini akan selalu berada di depan sebagai pengganti dari subyek. Itu tidak sepenuhnya benar, karena masih ada fungsi lainnya. 

Secara umum fungsi dari noun clause antar lain adalah : 

A. Object of a transitive verb 

Sebagai object of transitive verb, maka sebuah noun clause terletak di bagian belakang kalimat, yakni menggantikan posisi obyek. 

Adapun jenis kalimat yang dapat menggunakan noun clause sebagai pengganti obyek adalah jenis kalimat verbal transitive atau transitive verb.

Contoh Noun Clause sebagai object of a transitive verb : 

1. I don’t know why mom is angry with me.
2. Tell me what she wants.
3. I hoped that they would get the first prize.
4. He said that he would come.
5. He confessed that he had taken the money.
6. No one knows where Tom has disappeared.
7. We can ask if Jane is coming.
8. He says that he won’t be able to go.

B. Subject of a sentence

Dalam hal ini, sebuah noun clause pada umumnya berada di depan karena ia berfungsi sebagai pengganti subyek. 

Penggunaan noun clause sebagai sebuah subyek dalam kalimat biasanya bertujuan untuk memperjelas atau memberi informasi tambahan mengenai subyek yang digantikan.

Contoh noun clause sebagai subject of a sentence : 

1. That John worked hard for the whole term pleased his wife.
2. Whoever thought of your idea was very great.
3. Whatever she want is fine with me.
4. Whether Carla will come or not depends on her mom’s permission.
5. What moved her was a sense of those worlds around us.
6. Why my cat stares at me all day is beyond me. 
7. When we will arrive depends on traffic.
8. How the clouds drifted on that March morning still makes me smile.
9. When the hero saves his girl from the accident is the most best scene.
10. Where the waffle is hidden remains a mystery.

Di atas adalah contoh noun clause sebagai subyek. Bisa kita lihat bahwa bagian kalimat bergaris bawah adalah klause nomina serta selalu terletak di awal kalimat.

C. Complement

Dalam hal ini, noun clause berperan sebagai pelengkap dari kata kerja yang ada di kalimat sehingga akan memberikan makna yang lebih detail dan jelas.

Contoh noun clause sebagai complement : 

1. Jack’s biggest mistake was that she accepted the bribe cash.
2. The loser will be whoever get pointed by this bottle.
3. My belief is that he will come.
4. The truth is that he has deceived us. 
5. This place will be where we spend our holiday at.
6. Those equipments are what you need to bring.
7. My belief is that she would not come. 
8. It seems that he will top the list of successful candidates.
9. The news was that the boy was drowned. 
10. The question is how those kids can finish all of these foods in 30 minutes.

D. Object of preposition

Noun clause juga bisa berfungsi sebagai pengganti dari object of preposition. Jika memiliki fungsi ini, maka klausa nomina akan terletak di bagian belakang kalimat, khususnya setelah preposition.

Contoh noun clause sebagai object of preposition : 

1. There is no truth in what Dad has said. 
2. There is no point in what Uncle Bob says.
3. Pay attention to what your teachers are saying.
4. Everything now depends on who is in control. 
5. Everybody laughed at what I had done.

E. As Apposition to Noun or Pronoun

Ternyata noun clause juga bisa digunakan untuk menjelaskan sebuah noun atau pronoun itu sendiri yang terdapat dalam kalimat. Jadi clause ini tidak menggantikan pronoun atau noun dalam kalimat, tetapi memperjelasnya.

Contoh noun clause sebagai apposition to noun or pronoun : 

1. The news that My husband is alive made us happy.
2. The belief that the soul is immortal is almost universal.
3. His statement that he didn’t take the money can’t be believed.
4. The fact that I am lazy is known to everyone.
5. It isn’t clear who has done this. 
6. The report that Liza was killed is untrue. 
7. Her belief that someday she would be a famous person cheered hers through his failures.
