Pengertian, Contoh dan Macam-macam Adjective Dalam Bahasa Inggris

Adjective adalah kata sifat, yakni sesuatu yang berfungsi untuk menjelaskan orang, tempat, benda, hewan dan lainnya. Secara lebih ringkas, adjective menerangkan noun dan pronoun.

Sama seperti verb ataupun adverb, adjective juga bagian dari part of speech dalam Bahasa Inggris. Penggunaannya mengikuti kaidah-kaidah tertentu.

Compound Adjective

Compound adjective adalah gabungan dari 2 kata atau lebih yang berfungsi sebagai adjective, yaitu menerangkan noun / pronoun dalam suatu kalimat. 

Penggunaan compound adjective sangat krusial, sehingga untuk mempermudah sebagian ditulis dengan hyphen atau kata hubung.

• Mr. Jack is a cold-blooded man.
• I love this brightly-lit house!
• This is a eight-foot table.
• Bianca is a part-time worker.
• This is an all-too-common error.
• Beware of the green-eyed monster.
• Danny’s dog is well-behaved.

Adjective Phrase

Jika simple adjective hanya terdiri dari satu kata, maka adjective phrase adalah kelompok kata yang terdiri dari adjective sebagai head (kata utama) dan kata lainnya yang berfungsi untuk menerangkan noun maupun pronoun. 

Perhatikan bahwa adjective dalam adjective phrase bisa terletak di depan, tengah atau akhir. Hal yang sama juga terjadi di adjective phrase, bisa sebelum atau sesudah noun / pronoun.
